Many modern distributed systems consist of devices that generate more data than what can be transmitted via a communication link in near real time with high-fidelity. We consider the scheduling problem in which a device has access to multiple data sources, but at any moment, only one of them is revealed in real-time to a remote receiver. Even when the sources are Gaussian, and the fidelity criterion is the mean squared error, the globally optimal data selection strategy is not known. We propose a data-driven methodology to search for the elusive optimal solution using linear function approximation approach called neuroscheduling and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal scheduler to not over fit training data. In this paper, we focus on the problem of shrinking-horizon Model Predictive Control (MPC) in uncertain dynamic environments. We consider controlling a deterministic autonomous system that interacts with uncontrollable stochastic agents during its mission. Employing tools from conformal prediction, existing works derive high-confidence prediction regions for the unknown agent trajectories, and integrate these regions in the design of suitable safety constraints for MPC. Despite guaranteeing probabilistic safety of the closed-loop trajectories, these constraints do not ensure feasibility of the respective MPC schemes for the entire duration of the mission. We propose a shrinking-horizon MPC that guarantees recursive feasibility via a gradual relaxation of the safety constraints as new prediction regions become available online. This relaxation enforces the safety constraints to hold over the least restrictive prediction region from the set of all available prediction regions. In a comparative case study with the state of the art, we empirically show that our approach results in tighter prediction regions and verify recursive feasibility of our MPC scheme.

This paper presents a novel approach to automated drifting with a standard passenger vehicle, which involves a Nonlinear Model Predictive Control to stabilise and maintain the vehicle at high sideslip angle conditions. The proposed controller architecture is split into three components. The first part consists of the offline computed equilibrium maps, which provide the equilibrium points for each vehicle state given the desired sideslip angle and radius of the path. The second is the predictive controller minimising the errors between the equilibrium and actual vehicle states. The third is a path-following controller, which reduces the path error, altering the equilibrium curvature path. In a high-fidelity simulation environment, we validate the controller architecture capacity to stabilise the vehicle in automated drifting along a desired path, with a maximal lateral path deviation of 1 m. This paper presents an original approach to vehicle obstacle avoidance. It involves the development of a nonlinear Model Predictive Contouring Control, which uses torque vectoring to stabilise and drive the vehicle in evasive manoeuvres at the limit of handling. The proposed algorithm combines motion planning, path tracking and vehicle stability objectives, prioritising collision avoidance in emergencies. The controller's prediction model is a nonlinear double-track vehicle model based on an extended Fiala tyre to capture the nonlinear coupled longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The controller computes the optimal steering angle and the longitudinal forces per each of the four wheels to minimise tracking error in safe situations and maximise the vehicle-to-obstacle distance in emergencies. Thanks to the optimisation of the longitudinal tyre forces, the proposed controller can produce an extra yaw moment, increasing the vehicle's lateral agility to avoid obstacles while keeping the vehicle stable. The optimal forces are constrained in the tyre friction circle not to exceed the tyres and vehicle capabilities. In a high-fidelity simulation environment, we demonstrate the benefits of torque vectoring, showing that our proposed approach is capable of successfully avoiding obstacles and keeping the vehicle stable while driving a double-lane change manoeuvre, in comparison to baselines lacking torque vectoring or collision avoidance prioritisation., Comment: Accepted at IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics, Boston, USA, 2024

Large language models (LLMs) have received considerable attention recently due to their outstanding comprehension and reasoning capabilities, leading to great progress in many fields. The advancement of LLM techniques also offers promising opportunities to automate many tasks in the telecommunication (telecom) field. After pre-training and fine-tuning, LLMs can perform diverse downstream tasks based on human instructions, paving the way to artificial general intelligence (AGI)-enabled 6G. Given the great potential of LLM technologies, this work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of LLM-enabled telecom networks. In particular, we first present LLM fundamentals, including model architecture, pre-training, fine-tuning, inference and utilization, model evaluation, and telecom deployment. Then, we introduce LLM-enabled key techniques and telecom applications in terms of generation, classification, optimization, and prediction problems. Specifically, the LLM-enabled generation applications include telecom domain knowledge, code, and network configuration generation. After that, the LLM-based classification applications involve network security, text, image, and traffic classification problems. Moreover, multiple LLM-enabled optimization techniques are introduced, such as automated reward function design for reinforcement learning and verbal reinforcement learning. Furthermore, for LLM-aided prediction problems, we discussed time-series prediction models and multi-modality prediction problems for telecom. Finally, we highlight the challenges and identify the future directions of LLM-enabled telecom networks.

Nonlinear system identification remains an important open challenge across research and academia. Large numbers of novel approaches are seen published each year, each presenting improvements or extensions to existing methods. It is natural, therefore, to consider how one might choose between these competing models. Benchmark datasets provide one clear way to approach this question. However, to make meaningful inference based on benchmark performance it is important to understand how well a new method performs comparatively to results available with well-established methods. This paper presents a set of ten baseline techniques and their relative performances on five popular benchmarks. The aim of this contribution is to stimulate thought and discussion regarding objective comparison of identification methodologies.

Efficient parameter identification of electrochemical models is crucial for accurate monitoring and control of lithium-ion cells. This process becomes challenging when applied to complex models that rely on a considerable number of interdependent parameters that affect the output response. Gradient-based and metaheuristic optimization techniques, although previously employed for this task, are limited by their lack of robustness, high computational costs, and susceptibility to local minima. In this study, Bayesian Optimization is used for tuning the dynamic parameters of an electrochemical equivalent circuit battery model (E-ECM) for a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC)-graphite cell. The performance of the Bayesian Optimization is compared with baseline methods based on gradient-based and metaheuristic approaches. The robustness of the parameter optimization method is tested by performing verification using an experimental drive cycle. The results indicate that Bayesian Optimization outperforms Gradient Descent and PSO optimization techniques, achieving reductions on average testing loss by 28.8% and 5.8%, respectively. This paper investigates the recovery of a node-domain sparse graph signal from the output of a graph filter. This problem, often referred to as the identification of the source of a diffused sparse graph signal, is seminal in the field of graph signal processing (GSP). Sparse graph signals can be used in the modeling of a variety of real-world applications in networks, such as social, biological, and power systems, and enable various GSP tasks, such as graph signal reconstruction, blind deconvolution, and sampling. In this paper, we assume double sparsity of both the graph signal and the graph topology, as well as a low-order graph filter. We propose three algorithms to reconstruct the support set of the input sparse graph signal from the graph filter output samples, leveraging these assumptions and the generalized information criterion (GIC). First, we describe the graph multiple GIC (GM-GIC) method, which is based on partitioning the dictionary elements (graph filter matrix columns) that capture information on the signal into smaller subsets. Then, the local GICs are computed for each subset and aggregated to make a global decision. Second, inspired by the well-known branch and bound (BNB) approach, we develop the graph-based branch and bound GIC (graph-BNB-GIC), and incorporate a new tractable heuristic bound tailored to the graph and graph filter characteristics. Finally, we propose the graph-based first order correction (GFOC) method, which improves existing sparse recovery methods by iteratively examining potential improvements to the GIC cost function through replacing elements from the estimated support set with elements from their one-hop neighborhood. A data-driven solution is provided for the fast-charging problem of lithium-ion batteries with multiple safety and aging constraints. The proposed method optimizes the charging current based on the observed history of measurable battery quantities, such as the input current, terminal voltage, and temperature. The proposed method does not need any detailed battery model or full-charging training episodes. The theoretical convergence is proven under mild conditions and is validated numerically on several linear and nonlinear battery models, including single-particle and equivalent-circuit models.

Koopman operator theory is a kind of data-driven modelling approach that accurately captures the nonlinearities of mechatronic systems such as vehicles against physics-based methods. However, the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator is impossible to implement in real-world applications. To approximate the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator through collection dataset rather than manual trial and error, we adopt deep neural networks (DNNs) to extract basis functions by offline training and map the nonlinearities of vehicle planar dynamics into a linear form in the lifted space. Besides, the effects of the dimensions of basis functions on the model accuracy are explored. Further, the extended state observer (ESO) is introduced to online estimate the total disturbance in the lifted space and compensate for the modelling errors and residuals of the learned deep Koopman operator (DK) while also improving its generalization. Then, the proposed model is applied to predict vehicle states within prediction horizons and later formulates the constrained finite-time optimization problem of model predictive control (MPC), i.e., ESO-DKMPC. In terms of the trajectory tracking of autonomous vehicles, the ESO-DKMPC generates the wheel steering angle to govern lateral motions based on the decoupling control structure. The various conditions under the double-lane change scenarios are built on the CarSim/Simulink co-simulation platform, and extensive comparisons are conducted with the linear MPC (LMPC) and nonlinear MPC (NMPC) informed by the physics-based model. The results indicate that the proposed ESO-DKMPC has better tracking performance and moderate efficacy both within linear and nonlinear regions.

Modeling of nonlinear behaviors with physical-based models poses challenges. However, Koopman operator maps the original nonlinear system into an infinite-dimensional linear space to achieve global linearization of the nonlinear system through input and output data, which derives an absolute equivalent linear representation of the original state space. Due to the impossibility of implementing the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator, finite-dimensional kernel functions are selected as an approximation. Given its flexible structure and high accuracy, deep learning is initially employed to extract kernel functions from data and acquire a linear evolution dynamic of the autonomous vehicle in the lifted space. Additionally, the control barrier function (CBF) converts the state constraints to the constraints on the input to render safety property. Then, in terms of the lateral stability of the in-wheel motor driven vehicle, the CBF conditions are incorporated with the learned deep Koopman model. Because of the linear fashion of the deep Koopman model, the quadratic programming problem is formulated to generate the applied driving torque with minimal perturbation to the original driving torque as a safety command governor. In the end, to validate the fidelity of the deep Koopman model compared to other mainstream approaches and demonstrate the lateral improvement achieved by the proposed safety command governor, data collection and safety testing scenarios are conducted on a hardware-in-the-loop platform.

The proliferation of 5G technology presents an unprecedented challenge in managing the energy consumption of densely deployed network infrastructures, particularly Base Stations (BSs), which account for the majority of power usage in mobile networks. The O-RAN architecture, with its emphasis on open and intelligent design, offers a promising framework to address the Energy Efficiency (EE) demands of modern telecommunication systems. This paper introduces two xApps designed for the O-RAN architecture to optimize power savings without compromising the Quality of Service (QoS). Utilizing a commercial RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) simulator, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed xApps through extensive simulations that reflect real-world operational conditions. Our results show a significant reduction in power consumption, achieving up to 50% power savings with a minimal number of User Equipments (UEs), by intelligently managing the operational state of Radio Cards (RCs), particularly through switching between active and sleep modes based on network resource block usage conditions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This note aims to provide a systematic understanding of direct data-driven control, enriching the existing literature not by adding another isolated result, but rather by offering a comprehensive, versatile, and unifying framework that sets the stage for future explorations and applications in this domain. To this end, we formulate the nonlinear design problem from a high-level perspective as a set of desired controlled systems and propose systematic procedures to synthesize data-driven control algorithms that meet the design requirements specified in the desired set. Various examples are presented to demonstrate the comprehensiveness and adaptability of the proposed approach.

One of the main theoretical challenges in learning dynamical systems from data is providing upper bounds on the generalization error, that is, the difference between the expected prediction error and the empirical prediction error measured on some finite sample. In machine learning, a popular class of such bounds are the so-called Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) bounds. In this paper, we derive a PAC bound for stable continuous-time linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. Flow-based market coupling is substantially altering the computation of cross-zonal capacities for the trade of electricity in the vast majority of European markets. The main benefit of the flow-based method is improved accuracy by better representing the impact of cross-zonal trade on the power flows in transmission grids. Some borders, adjacent to flow-based capacity regions, are represented through net transfer capacities during market coupling. Under the current standard hybrid coupling, the utilization of grid elements in the flow-based regions due to the predicted trade across such borders is not available for trades between flow-based zones. The flow-based representation is not limited to the given capacity calculation region, but can be extended to also model the impact of trade with other regions. This so-called advanced hybrid coupling replaces the priority inherently given to trade across net transfer capacity-coupled borders by introducing virtual bidding zones. These map the effect of non-flow-based borders on line capacities in the flow-based regions, enabling the market coupling optimization to prioritize trade between flow-based bidding zones and trade across non-flow-based borders. This paper explains the mechanism of advanced hybrid coupling and how it is modeled mathematically. Based on a test network, a case study shows to what extent and why advanced hybrid coupling leads to welfare gains during market coupling and lower congestion management costs in the flow-based region.

Propagation modeling is a crucial tool for successful wireless deployments and spectrum planning with the demand for high modeling accuracy continuing to grow. Recognizing that detailed knowledge of the physical environment (terrain and clutter) is essential, we propose a novel approach that uses environmental information for predictions. Instead of relying on complex, detail-intensive models, we explore the use of simplified scalar features involving the total obstruction depth along the direct path from transmitter to receiver. Utilizing solar energy to meet space heating and domestic hot water demand is very efficient (in terms of environmental footprint as well as cost), but in order to ensure that user demand is entirely covered throughout the year needs to be complemented with auxiliary heating systems, typically boilers and heat pumps. Naturally, the optimal control of such a system depends on an accurate prediction of solar thermal production. Experimental testing and physics-based numerical models are used to find a collector's performance curve - the mapping from solar radiation and other external conditions to heat production - but this curve changes over time once the collector is exposed to outdoor conditions. In order to deploy advanced control strategies in small domestic installations, we present an approach that uses machine learning to automatically construct and continuously adapt a model that predicts heat production. Our design is driven by the need to (a) construct and adapt models using supervision that can be extracted from low-cost instrumentation, avoiding extreme accuracy and reliability requirements; and (b) at inference time, use inputs that are typically provided in publicly available weather forecasts. Recent developments in attention-based machine learning, as well as careful adaptation of the training setup to the specifics of the task, have allowed us to design a machine learning-based solution that covers our requirements. We present positive empirical results for the predictive accuracy of our solution, and discuss the impact of these results on the end-to-end system.

Most planning of the traditional hydrogen energy supply chain (HSC) focuses on the storage and transportation links between production and consumption ends. It ignores the energy flows and interactions between each link, making it unsuitable for energy system planning analysis. Therefore, we propose the concept of a hydrogen energy chain (HEC) based on the HSC, which emphasizes the interactions between different types of energy flows in the production, compression, storage, transportation, and application links of hydrogen. The HEC plays a crucial role in mitigating fluctuations of renewable energy and facilitating the optimal allocation of heterogeneous energy sources across time and space. Effective collaborative planning models that consider HEC are essential for the optimal configuration of multi-energy systems (MESs), which guarantees high-efficiency operation and the economic and environmental friendliness of the system. This paper presents a systematic review of recent articles on collaborative planning of integrated hydrogen energy chain multi-energy systems (HEC-MESs). First, we introduce the basic framework of HEC-MES, focusing on the current research status of the production, compression, storage, transportation, and application links in HEC. Furthermore, we review technology types of hydrogen energy for planning and summarize the typical forms of HEC in MESs. Then, the following sections outline the models and methods for collaborative planning of HEC-MES. They include detailed analyses of covered sector types, spatial and temporal scopes of planning, uncertainties, model formulations, and solution methods. Finally, the paper concludes by summarizing the research gaps identified in current articles and outlining directions for future research.

This paper presents an adaptive tracking model predictive control (MPC) scheme to control unknown nonlinear systems based on an adaptively estimated linear model. The model is determined based on linear system identification using a moving window of past measurements, and it serves as a local approximation of the underlying nonlinear dynamics. We prove that the presented scheme ensures practical exponential stability of the (unknown) optimal reachable equilibrium for a given output setpoint. Finally, we apply the proposed scheme in simulation and compare it to an alternative direct data-driven MPC scheme based on the Fundamental Lemma.

The exploration of under-ice environments presents unique challenges due to limited access for scientific research. This report investigates the potential of deploying a fully actuated Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for shallow area exploration beneath ice sheets. Leveraging advancements in marine robotics technology, ROVs offer a promising solution for extending human presence into remote underwater locations. To enable successful under-ice exploration, the ROV must follow precise trajectories for effective localization signal reception. This study develops a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear system controller, incorporating a Lyapunov-based stability guarantee and an adaptation law to mitigate unknown environmental disturbances. Fuzzy logic is employed to dynamically adjust adaptation rates, enhancing performance in highly nonlinear ROV dynamic systems. Additionally, a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm automates the tuning of controller parameters for optimal trajectory tracking. The report details the ROV dynamic model, the proposed control framework, and the PSO-based tuning process. Simulation-based experiments validate the efficacy of the methodology, with experimental results demonstrating superior trajectory tracking performance compared to baseline controllers. This work contributes to the advancement of under-ice exploration capabilities and sets the stage for future research in marine robotics and autonomous underwater systems.

Large-scale power outages caused by extreme weather events are one of the major factors weakening grid resilience. In order to prevent the critical infrastructure from cascading failure, power lines are often proactively de-energized under the threat of a progressing wildfire. In this context, the potential of microgrid (MG) functioning in islanded mode can be exploited to enhance the resiliency of the power grid. However, there are numerous uncertainties originating from these types of events and an accurate modeling of the MG is required to harness its full potential. In this paper, we consider the uncertainty in line outages depending on fire propagation and reduced solar power generation due to the particulate matter in wildfire smoke. We formulate a two-stage stochastic MG optimal power flow problem by utilizing a second-order cone relaxation of the DistFlow model. Leveraging an effective approximation of the resistive heat gain, we separate the complicating constraints of dynamic line rating from the resulting optimization problem. Extensive simulation results corroborate the merits of our proposed framework, which is tested on a modified IEEE 22-bus system.

Physics-guided neural networks (PGNN) is an effective tool that combines the benefits of data-driven modeling with the interpretability and generalization of underlying physical information. However, for a classical PGNN, the penalization of the physics-guided part is at the output level, which leads to a conservative result as systems with highly similar state-transition functions, i.e. only slight differences in parameters, can have significantly different time-series outputs. Furthermore, the classical PGNN cost function regularizes the model estimate over the entire state space with a constant trade-off hyperparameter. In this paper, we introduce a novel model augmentation strategy for nonlinear state-space model identification based on PGNN, using a weighted function regularization (W-PGNN). The proposed approach can efficiently augment the prior physics-based state-space models based on measurement data. A new weighted regularization term is added to the cost function to penalize the difference between the state and output function of the baseline physics-based and final identified model. This ensures the estimated model follows the baseline physics model functions in regions where the data has low information content, while placing greater trust in the data when a high informativity is present. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy over the current PGNN method is demonstrated on a benchmark example.

The threat of geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) to the reliable operation of the bulk energy system has spurred the development of effective strategies for mitigating their impacts. One such approach involves placing transformer neutral blocking devices, which interrupt the path of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) to limit their impact. The high cost of these devices and the sparsity of transformers that experience high GICs during GMD events, however, calls for a sparse placement strategy that involves high computational cost. To address this challenge, we developed a physics-informed heterogeneous graph neural network (PIHGNN) for solving the graph-based dc-blocker placement problem. Our approach combines a heterogeneous graph neural network (HGNN) with a physics-informed neural network (PINN) to capture the diverse types of nodes and edges in ac/dc networks and incorporates the physical laws of the power grid. We train the PIHGNN model using a surrogate power flow model and validate it using case studies. Results demonstrate that PIHGNN can effectively and efficiently support the deployment of GIC dc-current blockers, ensuring the continued supply of electricity to meet societal demands. This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) for dynamic systems whose nonlinearity and uncertainty are modelled by deep neural networks (NNs), under input and state constraints. Since the NN output contains a high-order complex nonlinearity of the system state and control input, the MPC problem is nonlinear and challenging to solve for real-time control. This paper proposes two types of methods for solving the MPC problem: the mixed integer programming (MIP) method which produces an exact solution to the nonlinear MPC, and linear relaxation (LR) methods which generally give suboptimal solutions but are much computationally cheaper. Extensive numerical simulation for an inverted pendulum system modelled by ReLU NNs of various sizes is used to demonstrate and compare performance of the MIP and LR methods., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

As multiple and heterogenous unmanned vehicle systems continue to play an increasingly important role in addressing complex missions in the real world, the need for effective cooperation among unmanned vehicles becomes paramount. The concept of autonomous cooperation, wherein unmanned vehicles cooperate without human intervention or human control, offers promising avenues for enhancing the efficiency and adaptability of intelligence of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. Despite the growing interests in this domain, as far as the authors are concerned, there exists a notable lack of comprehensive literature on defining explicit concept and classifying levels of autonomous cooperation of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. In this aspect, this article aims to define the explicit concept of autonomous cooperation of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems. Furthermore, we provide a novel criterion to assess the technical maturity of the developed unmanned vehicle systems by classifying the autonomous cooperative levels of multiple-heterogeneous unmanned vehicle systems.

Variable speed limit (VSL) control is an established yet challenging problem to improve freeway traffic mobility and alleviate bottlenecks by customizing speed limits at proper locations based on traffic conditions. Recent advances in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) have shown promising results in solving VSL control problems by interacting with sophisticated environments. However, the modeling of these methods ignores the inherent graph structure of the traffic state which can be a key factor for more efficient VSL control. Graph structure can not only capture the static spatial feature but also the dynamic temporal features of traffic. Therefore, we propose the DVS-RG: DRL-based differential variable speed limit controller with graph state representation. DVS-RG provides distinct speed limits per lane in different locations dynamically. The road network topology and traffic information(e.g., occupancy, speed) are integrated as the state space of DVS-RG so that the spatial features can be learned. The normalization reward which combines efficiency and safety is used to train the VSL controller to avoid excessive inefficiencies or low safety. The results obtained from the simulation study on SUMO show that DRL-RG achieves higher traffic efficiency (the average waiting time reduced to 68.44\%) and improves the safety measures (the number of potential collision reduced by 15.93\% ) compared to state-of-the-art DRL methods.

This paper considers the observer design problem for discrete-time nonlinear dynamical systems with sampled measurement data. Earlier, the recently proposed Iteratively Preconditioned Gradient-Descent (IPG) observer, a Newton-type observer, has been empirically shown to have improved robustness against measurement noise than the prominent nonlinear observers, a property that other Newton-type observers lack. However, no theoretical guarantees on the convergence of the IPG observer were provided. This paper presents a rigorous convergence analysis of the IPG observer for a class of nonlinear systems in deterministic settings, proving its local linear convergence to the actual trajectory. Our assumptions are standard in the existing literature of Newton-type observers, and the analysis further confirms the relation of the IPG observer with the Newton observer, which was only hypothesized earlier., Comment: 7 pages

It is known that if a nonlinear control affine system without drift is bracket generating, then its associated sub-Laplacian is invertible under some conditions on the domain. In this note, we investigate the converse. We show how invertibility of the sub-Laplacian operator implies a weaker form of controllability, where the reachable sets of a neighborhood of a point have full measure. From a computational point of view, one can then use the spectral gap of the (infinite-dimensional) self-adjoint operator to define a notion of degree of controllability. An essential tool to establish the converse result is to use the relation between invertibility of the sub-Laplacian to the the controllability of the corresponding continuity equation using possibly non-smooth controls. Then using Ambrosio-Gigli-Savare's superposition principle from optimal transport theory we relate it to controllability properties of the control system. While the proof can be considered of the Perron-Frobenius type, we also provide a second dual Koopman point of view.

The discovery of linear embedding is the key to the synthesis of linear control techniques for nonlinear systems. In recent years, while Koopman operator theory has become a prominent approach for learning these linear embeddings through data-driven methods, these algorithms often exhibit limitations in generalizability beyond the distribution captured by training data and are not robust to changes in the nominal system dynamics induced by intrinsic or environmental factors. To overcome these limitations, this study presents an adaptive Koopman architecture capable of responding to the changes in system dynamics online. The proposed framework initially employs an autoencoder-based neural network that utilizes input-output information from the nominal system to learn the corresponding Koopman embedding offline. Subsequently, we augment this nominal Koopman architecture with a feed-forward neural network that learns to modify the nominal dynamics in response to any deviation between the predicted and observed lifted states, leading to improved generalization and robustness to a wide range of uncertainties and disturbances compared to contemporary methods. Extensive tracking control simulations, which are undertaken by integrating the proposed scheme within a Model Predictive Control framework, are used to highlight its robustness against measurement noise, disturbances, and parametric variations in system dynamics.

This study developed an explainable AI for ship collision avoidance. Initially, a critic network composed of sub-task critic networks was proposed to individually evaluate each sub-task in collision avoidance to clarify the AI decision-making processes involved. Additionally, an attempt was made to discern behavioral intentions through a Q-value analysis and an Attention mechanism. The former focused on interpreting intentions by examining the increment of the Q-value resulting from AI actions, while the latter incorporated the significance of other ships in the decision-making process for collision avoidance into the learning objective. AI's behavioral intentions in collision avoidance were visualized by combining the perceived collision danger with the degree of attention to other ships. The proposed method was evaluated through a numerical experiment. The developed AI was confirmed to be able to safely avoid collisions under various congestion levels, and AI's decision-making process was rendered comprehensible to humans. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is interacting with people at an unprecedented scale, offering new avenues for immense positive impact, but also raising widespread concerns around the potential for individual and societal harm. Today, the predominant paradigm for human-AI safety focuses on fine-tuning the generative model's outputs to better agree with human-provided examples or feedback. In reality, however, the consequences of an AI model's outputs cannot be determined in an isolated context: they are tightly entangled with the responses and behavior of human users over time. In this position paper, we argue that meaningful safety assurances for these AI technologies can only be achieved by reasoning about how the feedback loop formed by the AI's outputs and human behavior may drive the interaction towards different outcomes. To this end, we envision a high-value window of opportunity to bridge the rapidly growing capabilities of generative AI and the dynamical safety frameworks from control theory, laying a new foundation for human-centered AI safety in the coming decades.

This paper introduces Fusion Intelligence (FI), a bio-inspired intelligent system, where the innate sensing, intelligence and unique actuation abilities of biological organisms such as bees and ants are integrated with the computational power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This interdisciplinary field seeks to create systems that are not only smart but also adaptive and responsive in ways that mimic the nature. This paper addresses the following fundamental research question: how does the integration of grid-forming inverters (GFMs) replacing conventional synchronous generators (SGs) impact the slow coherent eigen-structure and the low-frequency oscillatory behavior of future power systems? Due to time-scale separated dynamics, generator states inside a coherent area synchronize over a fast time-scale due to stronger coupling, while the areas themselves synchronize over a slower time scale. Our mathematical analysis shows that due to the large-scale integration of GFMs, the weighted Laplacian structure of the frequency dynamics is preserved, however, the entries of the Laplacian may be significantly modified based on the location and penetration levels of the GFMs. This can impact and potentially significantly alter the coherency structure of the system. The stochastic multi-armed bandit problem studies decision-making under uncertainty. In the problem, the learner interacts with an environment by choosing an action at each round, where a round is an instance of an interaction. In response, the environment reveals a reward, which is sampled from a stochastic process, to the learner. The goal of the learner is to maximize cumulative reward. A specific variation of the stochastic multi-armed bandit problem is the restless bandit, where the reward for each action is sampled from a Markov chain. The restless bandit with a discrete state-space is a well-studied problem, but to the best of our knowledge, not many results exist for the continuous state-space version which has many applications such as hyperparameter optimization. In this work, we tackle the restless bandit with continuous state-space by assuming the rewards are the inner product of an action vector and a state vector generated by a linear Gaussian dynamical system. To predict the reward for each action, we propose a method that takes a linear combination of previously observed rewards for predicting each action's next reward. We show that, regardless of the sequence of previous actions chosen, the reward sampled for any previously chosen action can be used for predicting another action's future reward, i.e. the reward sampled for action 1 at round $t-1$ can be used for predicting the reward for action $2$ at round $t$. This is accomplished by designing a modified Kalman filter with a matrix representation that can be learned for reward prediction. Numerical evaluations are carried out on a set of linear Gaussian dynamical systems.

Lyapunov redesign is a classical technique that uses a nominal control and its corresponding nominal Lyapunov function to design a discontinuous control, such that it compensates the uncertainties and disturbances. In this paper, the idea of Lyapunov redesign is used to propose an adaptive time-varying gain controller to stabilize a class of perturbed chain of integrators with an unknown control coefficient. It is assumed that the upper bound of the perturbation exists but is unknown. A proportional navigation feedback type gain is used to drive the system's trajectories into a prescribed vicinity of the origin in a predefined time, measured using a quadratic Lyapunov function. Once this neighborhood is reached, a barrier function-based gain is used, ensuring that the system's trajectories never leave this neighborhood despite uncertainties and perturbations. In recent years, the integration of communication and control systems has gained significant traction in various domains, ranging from autonomous vehicles to industrial automation and beyond. Multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms have proven their effectiveness as a robust framework for solving control problems. In this work, we investigate the use of MAB algorithms to control remote devices, which faces considerable challenges primarily represented by latency and reliability. We analyze the effectiveness of MABs operating in environments where the action feedback from controlled devices is transmitted over an unreliable communication channel and stored in a Geo/Geo/1 queue. We investigate the impact of queue sampling strategies on the MAB performance, and introduce a new stochastic approach. Its performance in terms of regret is evaluated against established algorithms in the literature for both upper confidence bound (UCB) and Thompson Sampling (TS) algorithms. Additionally, we study the trade-off between maximizing rewards and minimizing energy consumption.

We present the identification of the non-linear dynamics of a novel hovercraft design, employing end-to-end deep learning techniques. Our experimental setup consists of a hovercraft propelled by racing drone propellers mounted on a lightweight foam base, allowing it to float and be controlled freely on an air hockey table. We learn parametrized physics-inspired non-linear models directly from data trajectories, leveraging gradient-based optimization techniques prevalent in machine learning research. The chosen model structure allows us to control the position of the hovercraft precisely on the air hockey table. We then analyze the prediction performance and demonstrate the closed-loop control performance on the real system.

Electromagnetic (EM) body models based on the scalar diffraction theory allow to predict the impact of subject motions on the radio propagation channel without requiring a time-consuming full-wave approach. On the other hand, they are less effective in complex environments characterized by significant multipath effects. Recently, emerging radio sensing applications have proposed the adoption of smart antennas with non-isotropic radiation characteristics to improve coverage.This letter investigates the impact of antenna radiation patterns in passive radio sensing applications. Adaptations of diffraction-based EM models are proposed to account for antenna non-uniform angular filtering. Next, we quantify experimentally the impact of diffraction and multipath disturbance components on radio sensing accuracy in environments with smart antennas.

Recently, proposals of human-sensing-based services for cellular and local area networks have brought indoor localization to the attention of several research groups. In response to these stimuli, various Device-Free Localization (DFL) techniques, also known as Passive Localization methods, have emerged by exploiting ambient signals to locate and track individuals that do not carry any electronic device. This study delves into human passive indoor localization through full-wave electromagnetic simulations. For the scope, we exploit simulations from the commercial tool FEKO software that employs the Method of Moments (MoM). In particular, we collect and analyze the electric field values in a scenario constituted by a dense 2D/3D deployment of receivers in the presence of an anthropomorphic mobile target. The paper describes in detail the collected dataset and provides a first analysis based on a statistical approach. Possible use cases are also investigated through examples in the context of passive localization, sensing, and imaging.

Controllability is a fundamental property of control systems, serving as the prerequisite for controller design. While controllability test is well established in modelic (i.e., model-driven) control systems, extending it to datatic (i.e., data-driven) control systems is still a challenging task due to the absence of system models. In this study, we propose a general controllability test method for nonlinear systems with datatic description, where the system behaviors are merely described by data. In this situation, the state transition information of a dynamic system is available only at a limited number of data points, leaving the behaviors beyond these points unknown. Different from traditional exact controllability, we introduce a new concept called $\epsilon$-controllability, which extends the definition from point-to-point form to point-to-region form. Accordingly, our focus shifts to checking whether the system state can be steered to a closed state ball centered on the target state, rather than exactly at that target state. On its basis, we propose a tree search algorithm called maximum expansion of controllable subset (MECS) to identify controllable states in the dataset. Starting with a specific target state, our algorithm can iteratively propagate controllability from a known state ball to a new one. This iterative process gradually enlarges the $\epsilon$-controllable subset by incorporating new controllable balls until all $\epsilon$-controllable states are searched. Besides, a simplified version of MECS is proposed by solving a special shortest path problem, called Floyd expansion with radius fixed (FERF). FERF maintains a fixed radius of all controllable balls based on a mutual controllability assumption of neighboring states. The effectiveness of our method is validated in three datatic control systems whose dynamic behaviors are described by sampled data.

In this paper, we present an innovative technique for the path planning of flying robots in a 3D environment in Rough Mereology terms. The main goal was to construct the algorithm that would generate the mereological potential fields in 3-dimensional space. To avoid falling into the local minimum, we assist with a weighted Euclidean distance. Moreover, a searching path from the start point to the target, with respect to avoiding the obstacles was applied. The environment was created by connecting two cameras working in real-time. After coarse-graining a complex system, the dynamics of its macro-state may exhibit more pronounced causal effects than those of its micro-state. This phenomenon, known as causal emergence, is quantified by the indicator of effective information. However, two challenges confront this theory: the absence of well-developed frameworks in continuous stochastic dynamical systems and the reliance on coarse-graining methodologies. In this study, we introduce an exact theoretic framework for causal emergence within linear stochastic iteration systems featuring continuous state spaces and Gaussian noise. Building upon this foundation, we derive an analytical expression for effective information across general dynamics and identify optimal linear coarse-graining strategies that maximize the degree of causal emergence when the dimension averaged uncertainty eliminated by coarse-graining has an upper bound. Our investigation reveals that the maximal causal emergence and the optimal coarse-graining methods are primarily determined by the principal eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the dynamic system's parameter matrix, with the latter not being unique. To validate our propositions, we apply our analytical models to three simplified physical systems, comparing the outcomes with numerical simulations, and consistently achieve congruent results.

Cost-effective water distribution network (WDN) design with acceptable pressure performance is crucial for the management of drinking water in cities. This paper presents a Microsoft Excel tool to model, simulate, and optimize WDNs with looped pipelines under steady-state incompressible flow simulations. Typically, the hardy-cross method is applied using spreadsheet calculations to estimate discharges. This method requires mass-conservative initial estimates and requires successive iterations to converge. In this paper, however, we develop an alternative method that uses the built-in solver capabilities of Excel, does not require initial mass-conservative estimation, and is free of flow corrections. The main objective of this paper is to develop an open-source accessible tool for simulating hydraulic networks also adapted for teaching and learning purposes. The governing equations and the mathematical basis for the hydraulic modeling of the system are mathematically described, considering the topology of the network, mass and energy conservation, cost of tank material, foundation, and cost of pumping energy to fill the tank. The use of this tool is encouraged at the undergraduate and graduate engineering levels, as it offers the opportunity to address complex concepts in a comprehensive way using a spreadsheet that does not require coding expertise. Hence, users can debug all cells and understand all equations used in the hydraulic model, as well as modify them. To demonstrate the model capabilities, three practical examples are presented, with the first one solved step by step, and the results are compared with the EPANET and with the results reported in the literature. Using the optimization method presented in this paper, it was possible to achieve a cost reduction of 151,790 USD (9.8% of the total cost) in a network that supplies a 44,416 population.

A stability chamber is a critical piece of equipment for any pharmaceutical facility to retain the manufactured product for testing the stability and quality of the products over a certain period of time by keeping the products in different sets of environmental conditions. In this paper, we proposed an IoT-enabled stability chamber for the pharmaceutical industry. We developed four stability chambers by using the existing utilities of a manufacturing facility. The state-of-the-art automatic PID controlling system of Siemens S7-1200 PLC was used to control each chamber. Seven precise temperature and humidity sensors were used to monitor the environment of each chamber. PC-based Siemens WinCC Runtime Advanced visualization platform was used to visualize the data of the chamber which is FDA 21 CFR Part 11 Compliant. Sensor data of the chamber are stored in the database in a periodic manner and also have report generation features. This chamber also has an alarm management system. The critical alarms are automatically emailed to the user to take action. Additionally, an Internet of Things-based (IoT-based) application was also developed to monitor the sensor's data remotely using any client application.

Large penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) brings huge uncertainty into the electricity markets. While existing deterministic market clearing fails to accommodate the uncertainty, the recently proposed stochastic market clearing struggles to achieve desirable market properties. In this work, we propose a value-oriented forecasting approach, which tactically determines the RESs generation that enters the day-ahead market. With such a forecast, the existing deterministic market clearing framework can be maintained, and the day-ahead and real-time overall operation cost is reduced. At the training phase, the forecast model parameters are estimated to minimize expected day-ahead and real-time overall operation costs, instead of minimizing forecast errors in a statistical sense. Theoretically, we derive the exact form of the loss function for training the forecast model that aligns with such a goal. For market clearing modeled by linear programs, this loss function is a piecewise linear function. Additionally, we derive the analytical gradient of the loss function with respect to the forecast, which inspires an efficient training strategy. A numerical study shows our forecasts can bring significant benefits of the overall cost reduction to deterministic market clearing, compared to quality-oriented forecasting approach.

The 5th generation (5G) and beyond network offers substantial promise as the ideal wireless technology to replace the existing inflexible wired connections in traditional factories of today. 5G network slicing allows for tailored allocation of resources to different network services, each with unique Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a novel solution for slice-aware radio resource allocation based on a convex optimisation control framework for applications in smart factory wireless networks. The proposed framework dynamically allocates minimum power and sub-channels to downlink mixed service type industrial users categorised into three slices: Capacity Limited (CL), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), and Time Sensitive (TS) slices. Given that the base station (BS) has limited transmission power, we enforce admission control by effectively relaxing the target rate constraints for current connections in the CL slice. This rate readjustment occurs whenever power consumption exceeds manageable levels. Simulation results show that our approach minimises power, allocates sub-channels to users, maintains slice isolation, and delivers QoS-specific communications to users in all the slices despite time-varying number of users and changing network conditions., Comment: 7 pages, submitted to VTCfall for review

Vibrations of damaged bearings are manifested as modulations in the amplitude of the generated vibration signal, making envelope analysis an effective approach for discriminating between healthy and abnormal vibration patterns. Motivated by this, we introduce a low-complexity method for vibration-based condition monitoring (VBCM) of rolling bearings based on envelope analysis. In the proposed method, the instantaneous amplitude (envelope) and instantaneous frequency of the vibration signal are jointly utilized to facilitate three novel envelope representations: instantaneous amplitude-frequency mapping (IAFM), instantaneous amplitude-frequency correlation (IAFC), and instantaneous energy-frequency distribution (IEFD). Maintaining temporal information, these representations effectively capture energy-frequency variations that are unique to the condition of the bearing, thereby enabling the extraction of discriminative features with high sensitivity to variations in operational conditions. Accordingly, six new highly discriminative features are engineered from these representations, capturing and characterizing their shapes. The experimental results show outstanding performance in detecting and diagnosing various fault types, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method in capturing unique variations in energy and frequency between healthy and faulty bearings. Moreover, the proposed method has moderate computational complexity, meeting the requirements of real-time applications. In a power system, when the participation factors of generators are computed to rank their participations into an oscillatory mode, a model-based approach is conventionally used on the linearized system model by means of the corresponding right and left eigenvectors. This paper proposes a new approach for estimating participation factors directly from measurement data on generator responses under selected disturbances. The approach computes extended participation factors that coincide with accurate model-based participation factors when the measured responses satisfy an ideally symmetric condition. This paper relaxes this symmetric condition with the original measurement space by identifying and utilizing a coordinate transformation to a new space optimally recovering the symmetry. Thus, the optimal estimates of participation factors solely from measurements are achieved, and the accuracy and influencing factors are discussed. The proposed approach is first demonstrated in detail on a two-area system and then tested on an NPCC 48-machine power system. The penetration of inverter-based resources is also considered.

Learning from expert demonstrations to flexibly program an autonomous system with complex behaviors or to predict an agent's behavior is a powerful tool, especially in collaborative control settings. A common method to solve this problem is inverse reinforcement learning (IRL), where the observed agent, e.g., a human demonstrator, is assumed to behave according to the optimization of an intrinsic cost function that reflects its intent and informs its control actions. While the framework is expressive, it is also computationally demanding and generally lacks convergence guarantees. We therefore propose a novel, stability-certified IRL approach by reformulating the cost function inference problem to learning control Lyapunov functions (CLF) from demonstrations data. By additionally exploiting closed-form expressions for associated control policies, we are able to efficiently search the space of CLFs by observing the attractor landscape of the induced dynamics. For the construction of the inverse optimal CLFs, we use a Sum of Squares and formulate a convex optimization problem. We present a theoretical analysis of the optimality properties provided by the CLF and evaluate our approach using both simulated and real-world data.

Ensuring safety and adapting to the user's behavior are of paramount importance in physical human-robot interaction. Thus, incorporating elastic actuators in the robot's mechanical design has become popular, since it offers intrinsic compliance and additionally provide a coarse estimate for the interaction force by measuring the deformation of the elastic components. While observer-based methods have been shown to improve these estimates, they rely on accurate models of the system, which are challenging to obtain in complex operating environments. In this work, we overcome this issue by learning the unknown dynamics components using Gaussian process (GP) regression. By employing the learned model in a Bayesian filtering framework, we improve the estimation accuracy and additionally obtain an observer that explicitly considers local model uncertainty in the confidence measure of the state estimate. Furthermore, we derive guaranteed estimation error bounds, thus, facilitating the use in safety-critical applications. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach experimentally in a human-exoskeleton interaction scenario.
